I know that many of you have been discussing the issues recently raised
about the recent changes in the recommendations for women's healthcare
screenings. As you interact with patients, family and friends I would
recommend that you have a working knowledge of what the Oncology Nursing
Society's position.
Just this week ONS sent it's statement on breast cancer screenings. The
knowledge that the ONS¹s current statement that ³the benefits, risks, and
potential limitations of breast self-exam, clinical breast exam, and
mammography need to be discussed with each woman and tailored to her risk
factor assessment² may be useful for you in your interactions with
co-workers, patients and friends.
I encourage you all to keep yourselves knowledgeable about what the evidence
states as our practice should be based on the most accurate evidence
available.
Sincerely, Leslie Smetzer
